    Our client, a privately-held company in the Saint Louis area with a newly-acquired regional subsidiary, has announced an immediate opening for an innovative and entrepreneurial General Manager (GM) with a broad yet solid business acumen to oversee operations, to inspire team members, to expand technical service capabilities, and to drive profitable growth. From small precision parts to structural steel, this subsidiary provides the expertise and resources for all machining and fabrication needs, including full-service engineering and design. Helping clients create products of the highest quality which are manufactured safely and delivered on time for a fair price is its core mission.


    In alignment with strategic goals, the new GM will be asked to flex, providing day-to-day, hands-on leadership while developing a strategic growth plan in close partnership with company leadership. The GM will engage in and oversee operations, including all estimating, purchasing, and project management functions. The GM will also spearhead business development efforts, assess needs in equipment and technology, recommend new investments, and further develop engineering and design capabilities to meet and exceed client expectations and deadlines.


    Tied to strategic goals, this newly-created leadership role will lead a team of 20+ office and shop employees and be asked to:


    • Provide Visionary Executive Leadership: Partner closely with CEO and management to create a strategic plan designed for growth and innovation. Inspire a sense of ownership and accountability in team members while communicating the vision and fostering a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and team collaboration.
    • Ensure Operational Excellence: Ensure high service levels, resulting in raving clients, are coupled with continuous improvement in quality, productivity, procurement and waste reduction. Incorporate safety, quality, and environmental responsibility into the company’s daily actions. Expand design and engineering functions to achieve additional manufacturing capabilities. Recommend technology investments necessary to leverage capabilities for innovation and regional growth.
    • Drive Profitable Revenue Growth & Market Expansion: Identify prospective clients and opportunities for service expansion while diversifying client base. Proactively nurture industry relationships to ensure a strong and steady pipeline of project leads. Determine and implement effective marketing opportunities that enhance brand. Spearhead research regarding target markets, clients, competition, and the evaluation of products offered. Participate in industry events, exploring new technologies, service-offerings, suppliers and vendors.
    • Inspire a High-Performing Team: Responsible for assuring the availability and full engagement of managerial, production, engineering, and office employees. Maintain a culture of excellence and unparalleled customer service by identifying training and development opportunities, engaging in frequent team communications, and ensuring a  safe and respectful work environment for all employees.
    • Manage Full P&L Responsibility: Partner closely with CEO and shop leadership to create a strategic plan and an annual operating budget that fosters increasing independence and an entrepreneurial culture. Maintain a strong relationship with CEO through joint strategy development, effective communication of results and issue resolution as necessary.
    • Asset Stewardship: Maintain proper controls and reporting for proactive risk management. Evaluate capital expenditures to assure satisfactory return on investments and assets. Collaborate with ownership on planning and design for new facility and equipment purchases.


    • Minimum of 10-12+ years of progressive operations, metals fabrication and engineering experience, including strong team management and a track record of leading a company, branch or division with responsibility over multiple functions.
    • Solid understanding of the technical aspects of the steel fabrication and erection industry, including familiarity with subcontractor requirements and contract negotiations.
    • Strong team management experience including recruitment, employee coaching and performance management, and a hands-on team leadership style. Must lead by example and be willing to flex from strategic endeavors to day-to-day and boots-on-ground tactical leadership efforts.
    • Solid knowledge of lean manufacturing, quality/continuous improvement systems.
    • Well-versed in best practices for estimating projects, material take-offs and pricing, labor calculations as well as managing shop drawings, scheduling, change orders and deadlines.
    • Solid business acumen, including P&L experience with a fundamental understanding of financial statements and reporting.

    • Excellent communication skills: presentation, verbal and written.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to build trust and rapport at all levels – with employees, clients, suppliers, ownership, and all outside stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
    • Strong software skills and solid understanding of MS Office products. Experience with AutoCard, Solidworks, Revit, Tekla and/or other engineering software experience desired.
    • 4-year degree in a relevant field is required; MBA/advanced degree is highly desirable.
